At the time “selling insurance” was to me the prototypical “job.” No offense to insurance salesmen. I’m sure there are plenty of them who love what they do, but to me, it was the epitome of what I didn’t want in life. Even at that young age, I knew myself fairly well. I knew that if I wasn’t internally motivated, there was no amount of external motivation that could make me move. Nothing could make me sell insurance. I didn’t care about it. I knew what I did care about, though. Music. There was nothing that I loved more.…

Forgive me for a second while I jump up on my social media soapbox.  GIFs are awesome, and the native integration into Twitter and Facebook have opened up a lot of cool opportunities. But most of you are doing it wrong. There are better uses for this technology than random reactions from movies and TV shows. Content like this is not building your brand. Sure, you’re getting retweets and likes and chuckles from your audience, but the emotional reaction is to the GIF, which has nothing to do with your brand.  It takes a bit of planning, and some knowledge of how…

Don’t get too excited, this post is more simple trick than rocket science strategy, but that doesn’t mean it’s not highly effective. In 2014-15 one of my goals was to increase traffic to kuathletics.com from social. My team and I were already doing social pushes of individual stories from our site, so I needed to come up with a new way to drive traffic. I did this by simply adding a kuathletics.com tag to social media posts that didn’t include a link. Think content meant to engage, posts without a call to action. Content like this: Michael Stigler's time in…

In today’s media landscape and especially on social media it’s more important than ever to boil down your message to it’s simplest form. Your audience simply doesn’t have the time or the attention to dig through a story to find the point. You MUST provide it for them. To do that for the Jayhawks we’ve created an extremely simple photo/graphic template that conveys the essential element of our story so with a single glance, and often a single word, you get the scoop. EXAMPLES: A program record 12-straight wins lifts @KUSoftball into the top-25. http://t.co/Oxm3XaxJ81 #rockchalk pic.twitter.com/iIb0xia6jb — Kansas Jayhawks…

As the official source of Kansas Basketball updates on Twitter and other social platforms, we have unique opportunities and restrictions that other media outlets don’t. One of the positives is the unique level of access. For gameday shootarounds, on the road and at home, I’m quite literally the only camera allowed in the building. This provides for an extremely unique content opportunity and a cool way to let fans get an inside glimpse at preparations for each game. Thus, the Kansas Basketball Shootaround Report was born, four photos from each shootaround with some kind of unique comment, stat or observation.…
